Vor 22 Jahren im Cole-Blog: Ohne Festnetz keine Chance!

Mein Vorsatz, in Zukunft ohne Festtelefon auszukommen und nur noch mit dem Handy zu leben, war nach vier Wochen zu Ende. So lange brauchte die Telekom, um mir in der neuen Wohnung einen ISDN-Anschluß zu installieren.

Gescheitert bin ich vor allem an den Empangsverhältnissen für D2 in München. In der neuen Wohnung am Gasteig, also mitten in der Stadt, loggte der Apparat zwar immer brav ein, aber jedes zweite Gespräch endete abrupt, weil sich das Netz offenbar in Folge irgendwelcher atmosphärischen Störungen kurz verabschiedete. In meiner Verzweiflung schritt ich sogar zum Äußersten und installierte eine abnehmbare Autoantenne ans Fenster meines Arbeitszimmers. No surprise so far

Why is anyone surprised? You elected an ignorant, boorish, inexperienced sexual predator as president. He has surrounded himself with ignorant, boorish, inexperienced people (who, admittedly, have not all been proven to be sexual predators, at least not yet). They are doing what they promised, namely tear up the social contract and push poor people into even deeper poverty by taking away their health insurance and other benefits and giving the money to their billionaire cronies. The US will once more be the only developed country in the world that does not provide universal healthcare to all its citizens. So, what are Americans complaining about? You got what you wanted!

Vor 22 Jahren im Cole-Blog: Das elfte Gebot

Wie man so hört, ist der Weitervermittlungs-Service gerade bei Spesenrittern hoch im Kurs. Der Grund: Bei Direktwahl taucht die gewählte Nummer in der Telefonrechnung auf. Die Buchhaltung sieht also, ob einer auf Geschäftskosten privat geplauscht hat. Tippt man dagegen die Nummer der freundlichen Fräuleins vom Amt (2555 bei D1, für D2-Kunden 2288) und läßt sich mit der Ehefrau oder Freundin verbinden, kann man nichts nachweisen. Wie heißt doch das elfte Gebot: „Du sollst dich nicht erwischen lassen…“

Keeping an IoT eye on tires

Truck tires cost serious money, so getting the most miles out of a set of treads sounds like good business sense. Besides, not all truck drivers are honest, and many employers complain new tires are often exchanged for old so somebody can pocket a few extra bucks. Humberto Loma Baptistella, CMO of WebRadar based in Brasil says his company is tackling both the problem of excessive tire wear and pilfering by using IoT to monitor them remotely.

The system uses sensors in the tires themselves to report tread depth and to report when a emergency braking maneuver causes on-sided abrasion, causing the tire to become unround, a potential safety hazard. We ran acros WebRadar at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, where the company was showcasing its IoT solutions for various verticals such as telcos, for whom they offer network analysis and hotspot planning.

But the automotive sector is where they offer some truly innovative solutions, including real-time fleet management that includes monitoring loading and unloading via video, as well as something they call “retogama”, e.g. route scheduling and working hours control, just to name a few.

No Wait and See

Floor Drees may be from Holland but she loves to live and work in Vienna where she heads Sektor5, a co-working space cum startup incubator – even though she admits that the Austrian startup scene is probably not the most exciting one in Europe. In fact, she believes Austrians are plagued by what she calls the “wait-and-see mentality” (‘Schaun-mer-mal’ Mentaliät).

Drees originally arrived in Vienna to work for Tupalo, a restaurant-recommendation portal, but soon became more interested in helping fledgling entrepreneurs to get a foot on the ladder, especially female entrepreneurs like herself. “There aren’t enough women starting their own businesses here,” she complains.

After almost three years at the helm of Sektor5, she is proud to have been chosen by Austria Wirtschaftsservice Gesellschaft to organize its incubator program AWS JumpStart, a venture capital fund run by the development and financing bank. Starting with three candidates, which has since risen to five, she provides coaching and help in keeping the books balanced, as well as holding hands through tense moments, and keeping the java flowing. Cleaning up with data analysis

What do digitalization and data have to do with vacuum cleaning, mopping up floors and emptying wastebaskets? Jan Bockholdt spent weeks and months pondering that question. Quite a lot, he decided – and set out to prove it, too.

Cleaning up after others runs in the Bockholdt family. His grandfather founded a small commercial cleaning company in 1959 and called it ‘Blitz-Blank’ (‘spick ’n‘ span’). Jan Bockholdt grew up “breathing hoovered air”, he jokes. Today, he employs more than 6,000 cleaners working out of 18 locations all over Northern Germany, making him one of the largest industrial cleaners in Germany.

But cleaning is mainly a manual job: cleaners push their carts full of mops, brooms and cleaning equipment through the corridors, stopping to complete the same set of routines in every cubicle. But some offices are empty because the occupant is sick or on vacation, so why wipe floors that nobody has walked on? Bockholdt went to work with a dedicated team of software developers and created an app that today is installed on tablet computers fitted to every cleaning cart and displaying a detailed list of tasks the cleaner is expected to perform in each room. Customers can access the system and specify exactly what they want the cleaner to do where and when.

But Bockholdt wanted to take to the idea a step further: Clients can also grade the cleaner’s job performance. “This gives us a good idea of how good our own people are”, he says, “but even more important is that we know exactly how happy our customers are at all times.” Weiterlesen →

Yu es pi? Yu mi aa!

Manchmal entspinnen sich auf Facebook Dialoge mit einer so überwältigenden Komik, dass der Tag eigentlich schon seinen goldenen Stern auf die Stirn verdient hat, bevor er überhaupt losgegangen ist. Man braucht dazu nur die richtigen FB-Freunde, die erstens Hirn haben und zweitens einen Sinn für sinnfreies Blödeln.

So einer ist mein Freund Michael Kausch – Verzeihung: Doktor Michael Kausch. Er ist an die Frankfurter Schule gegangen, weigert sich aber, seinen Titel zu führen, was für mich eine Art Doppelsnobismus ist, denn erstens weiß natürlich in seinem Umfeld jeder, dass er ihn hat, denkt aber: „Mensch, ist der Michael aber egalitär – will sich nicht mit seinem Titel über andere stellen.“

Jedenfalls ist Michael im Bereich von Werbung und PR unterwegs, und dort gibt es eine Abkürzung, die jeder kennt und verwendet, wenn er ein Produkt oder eine Dienstleistung besonders fein herausputzen will, nämlich „USP“.

Reversing the Trend

Before his inauguration, the US President-elect Donald Trump was ecstatic. Wireless carrier Sprint had just announced it would bring thousands of jobs back to the United States.

„I was just called by the head people at Sprint and they are going to be bringing 5,000 jobs back to the United States, they are taking them from other countries,“ Trump told reporters outside his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

If it only were that easy. Just hours later, a top Chinese newspaper, the Global Times, which is officially backed by the Communist Party, published an analysis piece that said, “It will be almost impossible for the [US] to restore its glory as a major manufacturing powerhouse under his presidency.”

So who’s right? And can politics strong-arm business to reverse the decades-long trend to offshore jobs, lured by the promise of dirt-cheap labor at the ‘extended workbenches,’ especially in Southeast Asia? Hardly. Weiterlesen →

Vor 2 Jahren: Wozu zwei Handys

Traurige Nachricht: Meine Frau hat ihren Handy wieder abgemeldet. „Für die zwei, drei Gespräche im Monat sind mir die Grundgebühren einfach zu teuer“, meinte sie. Ein Mobiltelefon in der Familie sei genug. Ich habe mit Engelszungen geredet, aber vergeblich. Merke: Man kann die Menschen nicht zu ihrem kommunikativen Glück zwingen.
